Chap 4. Appendix A - Configuring MacPPP 16
Chap 5. Appendix B - Configuring Open Transport 16
Foreword
If you have MacOS 8.0 or higher, skip immediately to Appendix B - Configuring Open Transport. Open Transport is Apple’s latest software and it supercedes everything discussed in Chapter 1. Furthermore, all the software is built into the MacOS, so no additional software (from NetCarrier or elsewhere) is necessary.
1. Installing & Configuring FreePPP / MacTCP
Audience: These instructions are for users who already have MacTCP and who wish to use FreePPP. If you do not have MacTCP, request the document "NetCarrier Mac Users - Preparation" for how to obtain MacTCP. Users of MacOS 7.5.x might have the TCP/IP Control Panel instead of MacTCP. This works fine, but the interface varies slightly. Finally, users who wish to use MacPPP instead of FreePPP will have some configurational differences. See " Appendix A - Configuring MacPPP". |

4. Appendix A - Configuring MacPPP
Audience: This document is for people who would rather use MacPPP rather than FreePPP. These instructions are designed to accompany the instructions titled " Installing & Configuring FreePPP / MacTCP".Warning: It is neither necessary nor recommended to install BOTH MacPPP and FreePPP. Pick one (we recommend FreePPP). But either way, you MUST install either MacTCP or TCP/IP. |
__________________________________________________________________________
1. Unlike FreePPP, MacPPP doesn’t have an "install" program. So, you have to put the pieces in the right places by yourself. There are two pieces to MacPPP: a) "Config PPP" goes in the Control Panels folder, as shown. b) "PPP" goes in the Extensions Folder. REMEMBER: This is also the window where you can find MacTCP. Restart your Mac.
2. Open Config PPP. Click "New…" to create the "NetCarrier" PPP Server. Then set up this window as shown. Click "Config…".
3. Most users can set this screen up as shown. For Phone Number options, see FreePPP instructions. You may have to play with Port Speed and Modem Init strings to get things working. Unlike FreePPP, MacPPP can’t auto-detect your modem. Click "Connect Script…"
4. This screen is unused and should look as shown. Click "OK" to return to previous screen. Click "Authentication".
5. Here put your User ID and Password as provided by NetCarrier. Make sure you enter both in the proper case (usually all lower case). If you have trouble getting passed "Logging In", double check these. Click "OK" to return to the previous screen.
6. Ignore the "LCP Options…" and "IPCP Options…" buttons. Click "Done". That’s it for MacPPP! You may have to restart your Mac for changes to take place.
7. After restarting, open the MacTCP control panel. Select the "PPP" icon. Setup the rest of MacTCP as specified in the FreePPP instructions. That’s it for setting up MacPPP! |
